Papal Nuncio warns of fake solicitations

Catholic Church leaders and the public were warned by Papal Nuncio to the Philippines Archbishop Edward Joseph Adams against fake solicitations using the name of Vatican City-based church officials.

Adams issued the warning in his August 14 letter to Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) President and Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo.

Adams said the Secretariat of State of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI “learned of still another attempt, through e-mail communications, to swindle Church institutions and/or unsuspecting private citizens by fraudulently using the name of high Church Authorities.”

The latest attempt of which uses the name of Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski, Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education.

The papal envoy said these unidentified persons are using the name of Grocholewski to collect funds from Catholic universities and education institutions.
